Rover SD1 running at last

This Rover SD1 has proved to be a somewhat frustrating project over the years, so much so that whenever it gets me down I ignore it for a few months. Thankfully the owner is patient and anyway it hadn't been on the road for many years before it came in to the workshop. I decided to go back to basics the last few days, with the plugs out I checked the compression, that was good but I had what looked like a very weak spark. Having already replaced plugs, cap, rotor and tried a new ignition amplifier I swapped in a coil and that seemed to brighten things up. The next issue was fuel pressure, I'd put fuel in the tank last time I did any work on it so thought it should be ok but it wouldn't raise any pressure on the test gauge with the fuel pump running. When I disconnected the fuel line at the filter nothing came out, a bit odd, so I dipped the oil level and found that the fuel was all in the sump. Today I drained the sump and refilled with fresh oil and also replaced the oil filter, what came out was a thin mix of petrol and engine oil. I had to remove and dry off the wet plugs but when refitted it actually fired up and idled, although not necessarily on a full 8. Running it for a while made a difference and after a while it was running on all cylinders for the first time in ages.
