The last time I posted about this job I was about to dig into the engine with a view to uncovering the reason for the low compression, that was back in April. As it came apart it was clear that it hadn't had any serious work carried out on it for many years. The low compression was down to a crack between the valve seats on cylinder 3 but it was blowing past the head to barrel joint on all cylinders. It was also found that the cylinder heads didn't match, the bores were glazed and the small end bushings worn. When the crankcase was split the centre main bearing was found to be worn, might have been partly due to one of the main crankcase nuts not being in place (fortunately found in the tin plate that surrounds the engine). The crankcase went away to have the crankshaft polished, new bearings fitted and then align bored. It's now got new barrels, pistons, rings, small-end bushings, big-end bearings, cylinder heads, pushrod tubes, oil pump, etc.. The next step will be to get the tin plate back on and it'll be ready to go back in the car.
