I took a look into why the Humber Snipe that came in a couple of weeks ago had no second gear. The photo shows the gearbox from the underside with the sump removed. The pump is to the bottom right with copper mesh filter attached, 4th gear actuator is the triple-barrelled device at the bottom and the reverse and 1st through 3rd valve block is at the top. Quite a complicated device and designed in the 1930s. I found the fault, the 2nd gear annulus has broken, the outside face of the groove in which the brake binds has broken clean off. Now all I have to do is get the gearbox out of the car and strip it down. Watch this space.
